چکیده

We use the results of a new, multi-epoch, multi-wavelength, near-infrared census of the Trapezium Cluster in Orion to construct and to analyze the structure of its infrared (K band) luminosity function. Specifically, we employ an improved set of model luminosity functions to derive this cluster’s underlying Initial Mass Function (IMF) across the entire range of mass from OB stars to sub-stellar objects down to near the deuterium burning limit. We derive an IMF for the Trapezium Cluster that rises with decreasing mass, having a Salpeter-like IMF slope until near ∼ 0.6M⊙ where the IMF flattens and forms a broad peak extending to the hydrogen burning limit, below which the IMF declines into the sub-stellar regime. Independent of the details, we find that sub-stellar objects account for no more than ∼ 22% of the total number of likely cluster members. Further, the sub-stellar Trapezium IMF breaks from a steady 1Visiting Astronomer, European Southern Observatory

A Study of the Luminosity and Mass Functions of the Young IC 348 Cluster using FLAMINGOS Wide-Field Near-Infrared Images

We present wide-field near-infrared (JHK) images of the young, τ = 2Myr IC 348 cluster taken with FLAMINGOS. We use these new data to construct an infrared census of sources, which is sensitive enough to detect a 10MJup brown dwarf seen through an extinction of AV ∼ 7. We examine the cluster’s structure and relationship to the molecular cloud and construct the cluster’s K band luminosity functi...

Evidence for Circumstellar Disks around Young Brown Dwarfs in the Trapezium Cluster

We report the results of deep infrared observations of brown dwarf candidates in the Trapezium cluster in Orion. Analysis of the JHK color-color diagram indicates that a large fraction (∼ 65% ± 15%) of the observed sources exhibit infrared excess emission. This suggests the extreme youth of these objects and in turn, provides strong independent confirmation of the existence of a large populatio...

0 A Population of Very Young Brown Dwarfs and Free - floating Planets in Orion

We describe the results of a very deep imaging survey of the Trapezium Cluster in the IJH bands, using the UKIRT high resolution camera UFTI. Approximately 32% of the 515 point sources detected are brown dwarf candidates , including several free floating objects with masses below the Deuterium burning (planetary) threshold at 0.013 solar masses, which are detectable because of their extreme you...

LINEAR PULSATION CHARACTERISTICS OF MIRA VARIABLE STARS

The linear adiabatic pulsation-periods of Mira variable stars have been derived. Approximately 2701[1]models were calculated for M = 0.7 MΘ to 2 MΘ stars with radii from 180 RΘ to 340 RΘ and luminosities from 2800 LΘ to 10,000 LΘ. The chemical composition of all models is (X,Z) = (0.7,0.02). From the result of this study, linear relations on Luminosity-Period-Mass relationship and luminosity-pe...

Luminosity Functions of Young Clusters: Modeling the Substellar Mass Regime

We predict near-infrared luminosity functions of young (5 Myr to 1 Gyr) star clusters by combining evolutionary models of very low-mass (1 MJ to 0.15 M ) dwarfs with empirical bolometric corrections. We identify several characteristic features in our results. These can be attributed to three causes: (1) deuterium burning in the most massive substellar objects; (2) methane absorption in bodies w...
